The Motorsport UK Wera Tools British Kart Championships will head across the border this weekend (17-18 July) as contenders in the IAME, Honda and Bambino classes make the trip Scotland and one of the UK’s newest karting circuits, Larkhall.
The newly refurbished venue sits just south of Glasgow and Britain’s premier karting series will see contenders vie for the coveted titles on offer across the impressive 1140 metre circuit. The fast and flowing layout will offer the perfect challenge for all categories as many reach the mid-point of the season.
After a busy start to the year, the IAME classes have experienced a month’s break with the Kimbolton encounter in May hosting the latest points scoring opportunity. With Larkhall marking the season mid-point, the pressure will be on for contenders to close in on the series leaders. As always in the BKC, expect an action-packed weekend with ultra-close racing across the board.
Honda Cadet’s head from one end of the country to the other, having recently done battle at the most southerly meeting of the season just a few weeks ago at Mansell Raceway in Devon. Bambino drivers have a four-round season in 2021 and were last in action at Clay Pigeon Raceway in May so will be eager to return to the track this weekend.
Fans and followers will not miss a second of the action during Sundays Finals thanks to extensive live coverage, broadcast on the British Kart Championship’s Facebook page. Footage will also be available on YouTube and the Motorsport.TV platform, whilst the BKC social channels provide a behind the scenes look at the weekend’s activities.
With this year’s British kart Championships boasting over 450 registrations across the classes, there will be no time to rest during the Scottish leg of the season.
IAME
IAME Cadet
Fusion Motorsport’s Zac Drummond heads to Scotland with a slender three-point lead over teammate Jorge Edgar. Drummond’s Kimbolton performance ensured he climbed to the top of the IAME Cadet standings but was pushed all weekend by the chasing Lewis Wherrell (Oliver Rowland Motorsport) and sits just two points further back.
Jesse Phillips led an Oliver Rowland Motorsport trio home in the Kimbolton final to take second and get his season back on track after a frustrating start – his performance netting him the Wera Tools Driver of the Day in the process.
Mini X30
When we think of Leo Robinson in 2021 – the word domination springs to mind. Leading every lap of the Shenington final, the Fusion Motorsport driver continued his run of form at Kimbolton, stamping his name on the top of the results in every Heat, Pre-Final and Final of the weekend. With a 28-point lead in the series, you can expect more from the Mini X30 ace in Scotland.
Wesley Swain (Fusion Motorsport) and Macauley Bishop (PMR Driver Programme) tie for second place in the standings heading into the weekend with Swain taking the initiative at Kimbolton. With nothing to separate the pairing, fourth place Jack Hobson (MLC Motorsport) will have it all to do if he wants to close in on the leaders.
Junior X30
Bumper Junior X30 grids are set to provide some of the closest racing of the weekend. Whilst the racing on-track is close, the points standings don’t tell the whole story as Argenti Motorsport’s Daniel Guinchard holds an impressive 49-point lead over Strawberry Racing’s Kanato Le. Dan Holland Racing’s Olivier Algieri took the Shenington Final win but couldn’t repeat that at Kimbolton and lies four-point shy of Le.
Despite Guinchard’s lead, the chasing title protagonists are all capable of taking the top spot at Larkhall so be prepared for his gap to close as they leave the Scottish track on Sunday night.
Senior X30
Clayton Ravenscroft (KR-Sport) has never been outside of the top two places in each final so far this season and currently holds a 10-point advantage over Strawberry Racing’s Thomas Turner. The pairing battled hard at Kimbolton with Turner having to settle for second in the final and they both enjoy a gap of over 30 points to their nearest rival Lewis Mackie (Fusion Motorsport).
The point standings in the Senior class have seen a big shift since the opening round, so like the Juniors, don’t discount a comeback drive from any one of the class contenders who head for Scotland.
Honda Cadet
Noah Wolfe (Synergy Race Team) took the opening round final win at a rain-soaked Clay Pigeon Raceway, but it was a standout performance by Timo Jungling (SFR Motorsport) in the Mansell Final who came from 6th place on the grid to take victory. That took Jungling to the top of the Honda Cadet class but only by two points from second-place finisher Joshua Graham (Ambition Motorsport). Despite a strong pre-final at Mansell, Owen Neave (CHDD) couldn’t quite replicate that in the final, but his consistency sees him third in the championship, albeit 16 points adrift of the leader.
Bambino
Having contested just one round so far this season, the Bambino contenders endured biblical conditions at Clay to complete their final in torrential rain. Austin Newstead took maximum points in the heats and final to grab an early nine-point lead over Jack Baker with Colbe Pattison third. Just 24 points separate the top 10 contenders, leaving the series wide open as it reaches the halfway point.
