About the 2019 KZ2 Championship 2019

The KZ2 geared class is the fastest among the short circuit British Championships, topping out at 90mph at most tracks. Max Verstappen is perhaps the best-known graduate of this class, which is hugely popular across Europe.

Although a greater investment than the Junior or other Senior categories, the gearbox, or shifter, karts are surprisingly easy to maintain on a budget. With up to 30 gearshifts a lap and sub-3-second 0-60 mph times, drivers do need to be very fit. There are a variety of CIK approved or homologated engines to choose from and coupled with a high-grip Le Cont tyre, the experience is similar to a fast formula single-seater.

Scott Allen, the 2016 British Champion, Dan Kelly, the National 2018 Champion, and James Glenister to name but three will have their work cut out to beat the likes of the 29-year-old Italian ace Fabian Federer. Jack Hawksworth, an Indycar and professional sports car driver, honed his skills in the class and wins every time on a return to karting. If racing commitments allow, he is guaranteed to be at the sharp end.

The British driver Danny Keirle, who won the CIK-FIA World Championship in OK senior in 2017, also plans to race. So a wealth of talent has entered, but there is no easy prediction for a champion.

Each week we are speaking to our 2019 Champions and ask them some all important questions to see what makes them tick. This week is 2019 KZ2 top Rookie – Daniel Gould How did you get started in the sport? I got into karting through arrive and drive events at Mansell Raceway. After taking part in a few events they helped me organise a test drive in a Rotax kart with the Rapid Motorsport team. I then raced mainly at Mansell Raceway with the team and managed to win the Club Championship in both 2016 & 2017 which is when I decided to move to the KZ class as a new challenge. What was the highlight of your Rookie title winning year? The highlight of last season was actually competing in the British Championship. it’s something I never expected to do and a huge change from what I was used to. After a tough start though, I managed to improve through the season and started to compete with the top 10 by the end of the year. What was your low point last season? The low point of the year was probably the round at Shenington. I’d raced a couple of rounds before the British round and really enjoyed the circuit, I just couldn’t find the pace on the British weekend. What’s your favourite circuit? My favourite Circuit would have to be Mansell Raceway. Having started my racing there it will always be my home circuit. It was supposed to be our opening round this year but has unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the virus. Who has been your toughest rival? Ashley Lewis was my toughest rival last year. Ashley competed at Mansell Raceway when I started racing and we have been mates ever since. It was good to be back competing with him again for the Rookie Championship, especially with it been so close all season. When we do get underway, what are your hopes for the new season? This season I was just hoping to keep improving and start to move up the grid. I’ve competed in a couple of early rounds at Forest Edge and Shenington and shown improvement on last year so was looking forward to the challenge. We wish Daniel and everyone in the BKC well. Stay safe and look after each other. We will be back in action before you know it #StayOnTrack
