🏆2019 Junior TKM Champion – Zak Oates

Each week we are speaking to our 2019 Champions and ask them some all important questions to see what makes them tick.

This Week is 2019 Junior TKM Champion – Zak Oates.

How did you get started in the sport?

When I was 11 years old my dad took me to our local indoor circuit. After a couple of sessions he decided I wasn’t to bad in a kart and we wanted to take it further. We went to one of our closest tracks and spoke with a great team who helped me get started in the sport.

What was the highlight of your title winning year?

The highlight of my season was round 1 at PFi. It was a tough weekend with my engine blowing up in one of the heats. This meant I started at the back for final 1, I fought my way up and started 4th for the 2nd final and managed to take my first ever win at British Championship level.

What was your low point last season?

My low point was after the first final at the last round of the British Championships. I was in a great position to win the championship and only needed to finish the final lap but unfortunately my chain flew off. I was gutted and didn’t think I’d win the Championship as anything can happen at the back of the field.

Why do you enjoy competing in Karting and the BKC?

I enjoy competing at the British Championship because it’s a very competitive field, it wasn’t the same people battling at the front every round. This is what makes it so fun.

What’s your favourite circuit?

My favourite circuit is Dunkeswell Kart Club.

Who has been your toughest rival?

My toughest rival of last season would have to be Harry Yardley-Rose, he made progression going into this season and put me under some great pressure throughout the season.

When we do get underway, what are your hopes for the new season?

It will be my first season in the Senior X30 so I will be hoping to make great progression and get some good results along the way.

Due to the delayed start to the season what are you planning on doing with this unexpected time off from racing?

Due to the delayed start I’ll be making sure I remain fit and healthy and I’m going to try to work on areas I’m weak on to put me in the best possible position for the upcoming season.

We wish Zak and everyone in the BKC well. Stay safe and look after each other. We will be back in action before you know it #StayOnTrack
